| The Memorial Organ is recently rebuilt and redesigned after the English
Cathedral Model, with weighty Diapasons and Chorus Reeds. It is a versatile
instrument, being both suited to choral accompaniment and to organ literature. The original instrument was built by the Philadelphia builder C. S. Haskell in 1909, and enlarged by that firm in 1918 to include a harp. This first organ was installed through the generosity of Mr. W. Austin of Baldwin Locomotives (Broad and Fairmont Avenues). This organ was entirely removed in 1949 due to changing tastes in organ design, and the M. P. Moller House from Hagerstown, Maryland was selected to install a new "up-to-date" instrument. In the mid 1970's, the entire Great division was removed and replaced by the firm of Hill, Norman and Beard of England. In the late 1980's, the organ was in need of a complete rebuild. Through the generosity of the Presser Foundation, and through efforts of parishioners the organ was entirely rebuilt, with much new pipework from various supply houses. Petty Madden Organ Builders was brought in to voice the instrument throughout. Since that rebuild, several significant changes have been made to return to the rounder and fuller sounds found in the original Haskell organ. However, these changes have been made in consonance with the tonal vision of English builders such as Harrison & Harrison and Willis. This has allowed the instrument to match more closely the needs of Washington Memorial Chapel's music program. The choral tradition of the Anglican Church demands flexibility of the organ to be both profound and solid as well as gentle and delicate. Since the previous rebuild, the organ has been changed by the following substitutions: |

| The present instrument is a splendid example of the romantic organ.
It is hoped that a new windchest will be installed for the Great Trumpet, so that these
pipes can be placed on heavy wind for improved tuning stability and tone. In the
spirit of the orginal Chapel Organ, it is hoped that a harp can be re-installed in the
organ, as well as the re-installation of the chime tubes from the 1949 instrument, which
are presently in storage without an action. If you may be interested in
contributing financially to any of these projects or to the continued upkeep of this
majestic instrument, please click here. |
